Disney Buys Star Trek

“Gary Seven” (Reporter Without Portfolio)

I just received a call from “Gary Seven.”

DeviantArt has many surprisingly well-connected members and one of them, a top Paramount executive, contacted us two days ago with a rumor so powerful that we wanted to be 100% certain before publishing it. We now know: Disney just bought all television rights to Star Trek.

Bob Iger, the current chairman and CEO of Disney, bought Star Trek from CBS Television, which had acquired the television rights when it split off from Paramount. Paramount has kept the motion picture rights.

Our contact, who wants to be known as “Gary Seven,” found out about this purchase — needless to say one of the biggest secrets imaginable — when Iger visited Paramount two days ago to let them know what Disney planned to do with their new franchise. Because Paramount is still making Star Trek movies, we guess there must be some sort of clause in the contracts that requires some kind of cooperation between television and motion picture versions.

Gary is on the Paramount Star Trek motion picture team and their heads started spinning when Iger laid out his plans.

What we know from that meeting is this:

  • Disney is rebooting the television series Star Trek as a fast track project. JJ Abrams had been in talks with Disney before it closed on Star Trek. Iger asked Abrams to secretly set the reboot of Star Trek in the Star Wars universe and in return he would be rewarded by directing the first of the Star Wars movies.
  • Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens, now being edited for December release, will plant suggestions that the Federation, Klingons and Romulans were connected to the Star Wars universe. They are dubbing references along those lines into the dialogue now. (Tribbles?) This will set up additional storylines in the television reboot of Star Trek. But Iger assured the meeting that the Star Trek characters would not actually appear in the Star Wars films unless Paramount agreed.
  • Disney will blend Star Trek into their Marvel Universe by placing Marvel characters like Iron Man and a future version of The Guardians of the Galaxy into worlds visited by the Starship Enterprise and its crew in the reboot. Disney also wants a unified backstory that Stark Industries designed the Starship Enterprise and is the go-to contractor for Starships to the Federation. Iger said he would consider licensing the same characters to Paramount for its Star Trek films if the scripts are made compatible.
  • The Disney Channel will be producing an entire series in which the Star Trek characters and more importantly the moral lessons and “humanistic” messages of the franchise will be directed at pre-school and K-6 children. Iger said this was a “passion project” for him because he has learned so much to guide his own life from Star Trek.
  • Disney’s Imagineering division has started plans for the Starship Enterprise Holodeck attraction for all its theme parks as part of TomorrowLand and will easter egg the attraction in the TomorrowLand film coming this summer.
  • Iger showed mock ups of Star Trek merchandise that will start selling at all Disney outlets this summer. In a dramatic gesture he ended his talk by opening up his shirt to display a T-shirt that read “Disney’s Star Trek Coming Soon!”

We are told by Gary that the response was icy while Iger and his team were making their presentation.

As soon as they left the room on the Paramount lot in Hollywood, Brad Grey, the Chairman of Paramount, turned to his executives and said: “Don’t worry. We’ve sued Disney before and we will do it again. They will not f**kup Star Trek like they did with so many other cherished properties. Not on my watch.”

We learned from another source that Paramount’s law firm took over a whole floor in its Century City offices as a “war room” and is pulling in copyright lawyers from all over the country (we guess that includes the one who works here at HQ because he’s been gone for three days and used to be General Counsel at Paramount).

We also learned that Paramount is furiously negotiating with 20th Century Fox Chairman, Jim Gianopulous (who used to work at Paramount on the Star Trek franchise), to use the X-Men or Aliens or Predator characters in the next Star Trek movie.

It’s all great stuff for the press and the critics. But watching this war will be a sad coda and will close the door on the legacy of Gene Rodenberry. At least cyberspace holds the original series intact even if Disney tries to withdraw it and only release it every seven years, as they have done in the past with animation titles.

We may have reached the Final Frontier.

Your Thoughts

  1. Do you think Disney will eventually own and control a single universal science-fiction narrative based on Star Wars, with all the characters from Star Trek as well as the Marvel and DC Universes fully subsumed and utilized per relative timeline?
  2. Do you think the world’s leaders should get involved to protect the integrity of franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars?
  3. Do you foresee the possibility of a lethal conflict arising between the Vulcans and Jedis different philosophies?  Will the undying spirits of Spock and Obi-Wan Kenobi become the political and religious leaders of the two “unified” but contentious factions?
  4. Is it now possible that Gary Mitchell actually tapped into the Dark Side of the Force in “Where No Man Has Gone Before”?
  5. Do you think Scotty and Tony Stark could get along together in the Enterprise’s engine room?

while just getting back to dA, I read this article..wow, it seems most spectacular as a concept and could generate a lot of new ideas/concepts.  But, it could also 'muddy' the waters and bring everything to a crashing end..destroying the galaxies..

I say Disney did a good enough job with the avengerd films, and Fox super heroes films are just dull, and neither of the paramount star trek rebooted films are really the best for the franchise.

Star Trek and Star Wars exist in very different fictional realities. They belong to different genre's, different styles, and have no relation whatsoever to each other in any concept, characters, story-telling, philosophy or anything else at all.

Star Trek is in the genre science fiction. Star Wars is in the genre fantasy. It is true that Star Wars has some elements of science fiction in it's stories and films, however, the science fiction concepts presented in Star Wars are less based on a creative scientific possibility than they are based on a convenient premise for the setting of it's dramatic fantasy story.

An important example of the divergence of concepts is in the core space travel technology available in either universe. In Star Wars, intergalactic travel is achieved with hyper-drive which allow the ships to travel at light speed. Star Trek was far more inventive and went around the known impossibilty of traveling at light speed with the concept of warp drive. Warp drive is a far more complicated concept than light speed. It is based on known scientific knowledge of relativity, gravity and warped space. Star Trek goes to great lengths to make this a realistic technology as part of the reality that contains the story and in which interactions between characters and technological elements becomes an acceptable device for the story. In Star Wars the technology is present but not at all the focus and very little actually happens with it. Nor is scientific discovery, exploration, or even problems with technology ever the focus. There is no reasonable way to consolidate these two technologies in the same universe without drastically altering the nature of one or the other.

Speaking of exploration and discovery, they are the very heart and soul of the Stark Trek universe, although, many movies and shows go more into inter-galactic conflicts than into exploration and discovery. The voyage into the unknown, the development of our species, and the possible social, political, economic and governmental evolution (presented in the most positive light imagineable). Star Trek is about possibilities in a solid science fictional framework.

The core of Star Wars is a force known as, "the force." It is the central concept. The force is almost like a supernatural power that binds all things in the universe. It can be sensed and utilized by various species, yet there is no technology that exists that can detect, measure, or use it. The force is not only a power to be used but is the basis for a creed. In that universe it is the one true religion. Conflicts within Star Wars are almost always based around the light and dark side of the force and the fight to maintain balance between the two. It is a mirror of many earthbound philosphies and concepts and can be taken metaphorically as a struggle within humanity.

The introduction of Star Trek into the Star Wars universe is a seriously creativity deprived idea, but one that would not harm the Star Wars realm because the force is the one true reality of the universe. Whatever technology or species thrust at Star Wars, the force is sure to handle it. However, the Star Trek universe is sure to be altered if it ever discovered anything as powerful and ultimate as the force. That would be just about it for Star Trek. There is no way that they could just go on like nothing happened.

            Scenario:

"It turns out that all things are connected by this invisible force in the universe, Spock," said James Tiberius Kirk.

"It is truly an epiphany, Jim. I am overcome with emotion despite myself," said Spock.

"An epiphany? Spock, this is the greatest discovery we've ever made!"

"It is remarkable, yet I fear that it is far more dangerous than anything we've faced before..."

The force would change everything for Star Trek. The discovery of the ultimate truth is too much for something that is based on the search for it. The timelines also collide terribly as Star Wars takes place a long time ago. Star Trek takes place in our future. Even if elements of Star Wars existed in Star Trek, it wouldn't contain the same characters from the movies as they'd all be dead unless they were frozen in carbonite for eons.

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." - Fantasy Fairytale

"To boldly go where no one has gone before..." - Science Fiction exploration experiment.

Nice April Fool's prank. I could truly believe something like this could happen.

And the biggest nerd award goes to...

We'll think of something to award you with. There's probably something at the back of my draw somewhere...

;-)

I got the initial idea from an interview JJ Abrams did where he talked about being a Star Wars fan rather than a Star Trek fan. His films felt like he couldn't be bothered with any of that 'scientific research stuff' and treated it how he'd treat Star Wars and ran with the idea from there...

Sorry for the pain!

To Explore Strange New Worlds...

I feel that it abandons that purpose in favor of more action and adventure type stuff far too often. My favorite Star Trek episodes involve the ones that have some "Outer Limits" or even some "Twilight Zone" type stories. Don't get me wrong, I love starship battles. Hell, I used to play Star Trek: Armada II just to shoot some phasers and launch torpedoes. Probably the best Star Trek game ever made.

Indeed, the series, as of late, just sticks to the action rather than focusing on some wild, sci-fi phenomena. I almost want the Enterprise to encounter The Force somehow just to see them react to it. Like in an alternate dimension or something. An incredible challenge in every respect and probably a foolish one, but what the hell? Star Trek is about the crazy stuff man!!!

It's been too long since the Enterprise has been stuck in a timewarp, got launched farther than they had any hope of returning from with their current warp drive, encountered godlike beings and stood up to them, defended the rights of strange alien beings, and on and on...

Got so excited over this.

Seriously, though, even though I get it's a joke now, I still don't think it's funny. I wasn't embarrassed when I found out I got excited over a joke, I was upset. I was looking forward to a light-hearted show about life in space. You got my hopes up, dropped them to the ground and giggled when they cracked.

The Stylus? That's funny. This? Not so much.
