Odyssey Update 1

Thu Oct 25, 2012, 7:31 PM
This first weekend of reading and re-reading Odyssey selections was just as intensely rewarding as last year. I am incredibly grateful to once again be able to share this process with all of you. Having Clive Barker on board for Odyssey II is truly an enlightening and educative experience. There is nothing more thrilling than reading through each of the entries and then re-reading the chapters that truly resonate and carry with them immense writing skill. This story could have gone in so many worthy directions and genres, and there was no end to the creativity and storytelling skill on so many of the submissions.

The people in my life were adequately warned, but there were still those that questioned my sanity and work methods as I stayed up for the duration of the weekend meticulously poring over eachof the entries... then starting over and reading them again.

Literature Winner: A Shower and a Change by markmywords85

Because so many of them moved me, I felt compelled to write a few words about a few of the entries that almost made the cut.

1st Runner-Up:

Odyssey II Submission: Chapter One  by RobertWGetz
So obliquely connected to Prologue, yet it works so incredibly well. This Chapter 1 of the story transporting readers to a unique other world was wonderfully stylistic and beautifully written.

2nd Runner-Up:

Odyssey II Submission: Chapter One by Kill-Natalie
Particularly effective horror writing. Possessing the power of sudden terror unleashed.

3rd Runner-Up:

Chapter 1 again AlNiCo-ism
An incredible amount of plot information that was very artfully revealed with speed-of-light pacing. Creativity + propulsion = ace storytelling.  Absolutely wonderful work.

ArtworkWinner: HansNomad

1st Runner Up:

2nd Runner Up:

Barker Odyssey II Prologue by Bartoneiros

3rd Runner Up:

Odyssey illustration no. 3 for prologue by MajoPavlovic

4th Runner Up:

A note to participants:

A number of participants in Odyssey II have brought up the issue of mature and erotic content in chapter submissions and illustrations. The intention of this project is to release a book that young readers (over 13) and of course older readers could enjoy. This does not mean at all that the content or themes should be targeted to young readers. But it does mean that the content should not be patently offensive to them sexually. The general guide is to submit material that would not require a “mature” designation and of course anything pornographic or involving an actual description of a sexual act would be out of the question. If you do want to submit mature content as a way of participating without the likelihood of the work being selected, you can do so by indicating that it contains mature content when you submit it. Please keep in mind that the published work will likely include material created by a deviant under the age of 18. It would be very odd to place their work in a publication they themselves could not purchase and enjoy. DeviantART has an article about its policies concerning mature and erotic literary content here [CEA Update: Defining pornography in Literature] and a related FAQ here.

Hy there, i would ask , where can we find the older odyssey project's latest news, so will there be a book from, or not? I hope it will be some day.

Maybe my earlier comment was too harsh and I'm sorry for the bad language, but I was confused and irritated because there were no any explanation about the rules of participation. Maybe you could have mention that we should not make any artwork with mature and erotic content in the first place, in the very beginning of this project. Knowing the work of Mr. Barker for almost 20 years and themes that he's writing about I thought that this is going to be another macabre, dark, provocative piece of art for adults only. But OK, let's move on. Thank you for choosing my illustration as a runner up. I will continue to participate in Odyssey II with less provocative, but interesting illustrations that would not in any way be offensive to young adults :)

All admissions will be considered no matter the subject type of content.   Brilliant writing trumps all.

It was very clear in the writing prompt that this story could lead us in many directions.

This is an evolving collaborative story project.

Yes, and it's a very interesting concept! I'm looking forward to see how it's going to evolve, no matter
who will be chosen at the end. It's interesting to see how people react to this, to see their illustrations, visions, concepts ... Thanx 4 the answer.

Well I wish that "note to participants" had been brought to our attention earlier because that's a massive "detail". Regardless I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the winner and wish an explanation could have been given. I'm referring to the lit entries here.

Just wanted to thank you for your consideration and for the time you dedicated to it. To be a runner-up was tremendously exciting in such a field (each time I read another entry, mine started to look worse to me), and to have my chapter described as you describe it above is something that will stay with me for some time to come. Thank you for selecting me. :)

Aw, I was completely unaware that the target audience was for "YA." I have written a few passages that contain adult content. Was this stated in the rules at the beginning and did I miss it?
techgnotic Featured By Owner Oct 26, 2012
Of course it will be considered.
