Calbuco Volcano Erupts

The Calbuco Volcano in Chile erupted for the first time in 42 years. Around 4,000 people were evacuated from a 12-mile area around the volcano, and so far no casualties have been reported. This amazing time-lapse captures the force of nature as this fiery mountain — considered the third most dangerous in Chile, a country with over 90 active volcanoes — rains fire and ash on the world below.

‘Lego Movie’ Creators To Make Animated Spider-Man

Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the directors of The Lego Movie, are going to write a treatment for and produce an animated Spider-Man film that will be released in 2018, according to an announcement made by Sony. It is unclear whether the pair will also direct the film, but it’s a possibility. The film will be independent of the ongoing series of Spider-Man films coming out through Sony, but supposedly it will “co-exist” with those films. We think this project has potential, what about you? Do you want to see an animated Spider-Man movie?

‘Captain Marvel’ Sets Writers

Nicole Perlman, co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who wrote the upcoming Pixar film Inside Out, will be teaming up to create the script for Captain Marvel, which is expected to be in theaters in late 2018. Marvel continues to show discerning taste in Hollywood talent with the people it selects to script, direct, produce, and act in its films, and for our part we hope that they continue to be as entertaining and enjoyable as they’ve been so far. In the mean time, congratulations to these two talented women! We are looking forward to hearing more about this project.

Apple 100% Sustainable in US

Just in time for Earth Day Apple announced that it is now powering all of its US operations using renewable energy exclusively. Meanwhile, the tech company is also meeting 87% if its energy needs worldwide with renewable power sources. This is a pretty huge step, and we are excited that a company with a high public profile like Apple is setting a good example on this front. Here’s to more companies following suit by Earth Day 2016. You can read more information about Apple’s sustainability initiatives here.

Christo To Create Golden Walkways In Italy

Bulgarian artist Christo has announced that he’ll be creating 3 kilometers of yellow nylon walkways across Lake Iseo in Italy. The walkways will link the mainland with Monte Isola, the largest lake island in Italy. This high-profile artist hasn’t done a major project since 2005, and he is funding this one entirely with sales of his other work. The walkways will be open for 16 days in the month of June before being dismantled — excuse us while we look up some plane tickets to Italy.

Rosie The Riveter Model Passes Away At 92

Mary Doyle Keefe, the original model for the famed ‘Rosie the Riveter’ poster passed away this week at age 92. Keefe first met Norman Rockwell, the artist behind the poster, while growing up in Arlington Vermont. She posed for the iconic poster when she was 19. Though the poster was originally intended as a unifying image for a country at war, it has also been used as a rallying image for equal rights for men and women all over the world. Rest in peace Mary Doyle Keefe; your image and the spirit of it will continue inspiring us for years to come.

They Found Dinosaur Eggs!

Some road workers in China have unearthed 43 fossilized dinosaur eggs. Of the 43, there are 19 specimens that are considered fully intact, and researchers hope to learn what species they belonged to. This discovery was made in the city of Heyuan, known colloquially as the “Home of the Dinosaurs” due to the massive number of fossil discoveries made in that region. As of press time, it was unclear what the discovery means vis a vis creating Jurassic Park-esque dino clones that we can observe for our collective amusement.

Google Now Does Wireless

So Google is going to be offering a wireless service, called Project Fi, which basically piggybacks off of T-Mobile’s and Sprint’s wireless networks, but with different price points and with the added advantage of being able to transition calls, including video calls, from wifi to mobile networks seamlessly. It will also be able to snake between available networks based on which one has a stronger signal, so if you’re in a place with shaky T-Mobile service but a strong Sprint signal, your phone will be able to detect that. Project Fi will work with Google Nexus phones exclusively, and is being offered for $20 standard packages with an additional $10 per gigabyte of data you use. Google will also refund the cost of unused data, so if you’re paying for 3GB and only use 2.5, you’ll receive a credit to reflect that. This is a pretty interesting approach — who’s thinking about trying it out?

Robert Downey Jr Walks Out on An Interview

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, noted for conducting enane interviews with celebrities and then occasionally trying out his best impression of a journalist by asking an off-the-wall serious issue question, got to experience the sheer ecstasy of having Robert Downey Jr walk out on their interview. Guru-Murthy threw a curveball at Downey Jr. when he asked the Iron Man actor to clarify remarks he’d made upon being released from jail in 2008. Downey Jr. was quick to bat the question down by reminding Guru-Murthy he was there to promote a movie, but the line of questions persisted until Downey Jr. stood up and walked out. You can watch the extent to which this situation devolves on the video, and you can also see another time when Guru-Murthy upset a celebrity subject here.
