Today's Inspiration

Today we would like you to dance like no one is watching.

Writing Tips

In this piece, JosephBlakeParker shares his 5 tips for revolutionary writers. This is just one of many pieces of writing advice that he's shared, so be sure to check out his gallery for other topics that may be of interest to you. Thanks for being an awesome deviant, JosephBlakeParker!

The Robot Hotel

On Friday a new hotel will be opened to the public and it's unlike anything else you've seen. The 'staff' at Henn na Hotel include a dinosaur-shaped receptionist robot that speaks in English, and the one that speaks Japanese, shaped like a woman with blinking lashes. There's even a porter that’s an automated trolley taking luggage up to the room. Hideo Sawada, is the Japanese businessman behind this robot hotel and he insists that it's not a gimmick but a real attempt to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Once again, thank you Japan.

Comic-Con Cosplay

If you didn't make it to San Diego Comic-Con this year, don't fret because IreneAdler has shared some great photos and some of her experiences in this journal. If you did happen to make it to Comic-Con and posted a recap of your own, share a link with us in the comments below.

Constantine Rumors

Constantine fans may have a reason to celebrate as rumors are circulating that the character may find a new home on the set of Arrow. Executive Producer Wendy Mericle, teased that she would love to have the character join the show and that there were some "political things to work out" but she is "really optimistic". What do you think of this news?

Dino Bird

The largest known dinosaur with feathers and wing-like limbs has been discovered in China! Roughly four feet long and weighing around 44 pounds, the short wings and weight of the Zhenyuanlong suni means that it was likely unable to fly, yet its wings have the complex structure as well as the quilled feathers of modern birds. While Scientists puzzle over the purpose of these wings, you can check out the fossils yourself and share your thoughts and theories in the comments!

Discover a New Deviant

These regular showcases by MicahJGunnell always result in us finding someone new to watch! Did you find a new deviant in this edition? Let us know in the comments.

Apocalypse's Storm is Hair-Raising

Fans rejoice, Storm's mohawk will be making the big screen! New photos of the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse movie reveal an in-costume glimpse of Psylocke, a rather Power Rangers looking Apocalypse, and our new Storm, played by Alexandra Shipp. There is great excitement about this new casting and design, due to Halle Berry's previous performance as Storm, which many fans considered lackluster. Is there a particular X-Men character you would like to see reinvented for the movies?

Life After Disney

eledoremassis02 created a project that involved him destroying iconic Disney landmarks through a series of photomanpulations. The project called Life After Disney was inspired by the History channel series "Life After People" and recently, Huffington Post covered it. Congrats!

The Science of Screams

Researchers at University of Austria have turned their attention to the human scream, and are uncovering what makes this vocalization so scary. They found that screams have qualities unlike any other human vocalization. In fact, the screams that were considered the scariest by study participants were found to be very similar in range and 'roughness' to the sounds used in car alarms! Read more about their studies into the science of screams here.

Yeah I can see why you would think that, but my impression on watching Supernatural was that it had taken many ideas from Hellblazer. That being said I think Constantine is a very cheesy rendition of its own source material. I wanted to like it but it was just so toothless compared to the comics.

Hellblazer has been around since the 80's, and has generally carried the same formula as the TV show. I wouldn't say Constantine is a rip-off of a show that, despite being very well done, came 20+ years later

I don't want to sound rude but... why does DeviantArt only feature artists with "amazing" artists? :/ it just seems unfair to me. I mean, I know it makes me feel like shit when I see that. I feel like nothing I do is good enough to get recognized, at least a little. Why doesn't deviantart feature artists whose work maybe isn't as good as those artists?? :\

In any organisation, system, or professional pursuit, quality matters. It doesn't mean that those who are not highly skilled are disregarded or unappreciated, though. DA provides a platform for all artists of every skill level -- beginner, intermediate, advanced -- to showcase their works and to benefit from feedback and recognition. You may not be at the stage where you are noted by staff members, or featured in journals by your peers, but that's why you set goals for yourself and your art. With improvement in your work, you will be recognised, and even now with your current stage, people will still value your creations and the fact that you're making an effort and seeking to express yourself via this mode. It's hard for every single artist to get noticed on this site when they're just starting out, and it takes personal effort in many areas to achieve this exposure. Concentrate on developing your art, keeping a positive attitude, and you will succeed. xx

So you're saying that they should feature less skilled artists instead of more skilled ones? How would that be more fair exactly? You would only be discriminating against the more skilled artists out there simply because they are highly skilled. The reason that you see the best artists featured is because that is what people want to see. It's the same reason you don't see the NBA giving a chance to lesser skilled players, or record companies giving contracts to people that can't sing all that well(though this does happen sometimes!!). We all want to see the very best that every field has to offer and art is no different. In my features I personally try to find the best artists I can who have less views than I believe that their skills merit. Not all of them are at the same level, but I try to pick them based on the ratio of how skilled they are versus how much attention they've received. As far as you feeling badly about yourself, we all struggle with those types of feelings, but you should try to concentrate less on comparing yourself to others, and just try to achieve the highest level that you are personally capable of! Stay positive and work hard and you will accomplish things you never thought possible :)

Because they only feature the "good" artists...? It would be more fair if they covered everyone... Not all people can afford to give 500$ for a fancy tablet or a professional painting software..

I worked professionally in the comic industry for 7 years before I could afford a Cintiq(and I still don't own a full size one)...That's like saying that all those guys in the NBA are only good because they can afford expensive Basketball shoes.

By adopting this mental approach you're actually sabotaging yourself. In order to make progress in life and in art you need to avoid making excuses. The world is not "fair" and it never will be, so it does little good to complain about it. All of us have our own obstacles to overcome, and it's those who persevere through those struggles who are ultimately the greatest success stories. I hope for your sake that you can be one of those some day, but that road to success begins with a change in attitude.

Keep in mind that the fancy software doesn't do the work for them. It still takes skill, it still takes years of effort and practice. Acquiring a tablet or photoshop does not magically or immediately make an artist better. Being featured by an admin isn't an award. It's simply them being interested in a piece and wanting to share it. Hone your craft, practice and focus on learning, not on a short day of extra attention.

Yes but the pieces they feature are all "museum quality". I just think it's a little unfair, to the artists, who, despite putting all their efforts and talent into a piece, still do not get recognized.

No artist is entitled to recognition. We ALL put it out there in the world and online because we HOPE someone sees it and appreciates it, but it's in no way guaranteed. Nor are those in the position to share pieces with a larger audience obligated to share pieces they might feel are lesser in quality because it might be 'unfair' not to.

I totally totally understand the frustration. I've worked hard. SO HARD for years. I'm still trying to make it in a really difficult industry. But I'm not going to tell a publisher or studio to pick me when I'm less qualified than someone else. Don't let seeing someone with 'better' work make you feel like shit. You're an artist. Learn from them, be inspired by them. Practice, practice, practice and draw EVERY DAY with the tools you have available to you. A DA article feature should not be the be-all and end-all for an artist. It's a nice ego boost for a little bit, it really is. But don't let it get you down if you're not picked.

If they did that it wouldn't be as good would you actually be looking at the site they show the best stuff because it is what people like to look at why would you want to look at mediocrity. I am nowhere near talented enough to be featured but someday hopefully I will be and it will be all the much sweeter when you know you have to be of a certain standard to even get considered.

So do I! I mean, at least put some lesser artists in "undiscovered", which is now not that at all, but super popular artists works. I understand that the great artists have worked really hard to get to where thy are, and no one wants to follow someone with crayon stick figures, but I agree.
