It is not quite clear how the guinea pig got its name. They hail from South America where they were first domesticated for human consumption by the tribes of the Andes in 5000 B.C. Yes, guinea pigs were food before they were pets and continue to be an important part of the diet especially in Peru and Bolivia. It wasn’t until the 16th century that the guinea pig became popular as an exotic pet among the elite when traders brought the animals to Europe. Even Queen Elizabeth I had her very own guinea pig companion. So now you know, contrary to popular belief, guinea pigs don’t come from Guinea. As to why they are called pigs even though they are actually rodents, there’s no clear answer and it may forever remain a mystery. For now rejoice in this furry collection of cuddly guinea pigs, sure to brighten anyone’s day.

You can tell that a guinea pig is happy because they ‘purr’.

When they sense their owner is nearby they will squeak to get their attention.

There are 3 types of guinea pigs.

The first is the American/English one which has short hair with a smooth coat.

The second is the Abyssinian guinea pig which has a more wiry coat with hair that forms swirls similar to rosettes.

Lastly, the third are the Peruvian guinea pigs which have straight, long and silky hair
